The Daniel(l)s of Whixley 1540 – 1860

One of the highlights of my recent road trip through Northern Yorkshire and Durham counties were my visits to the village of Whixley. There I found a wealth of information about the Daniels of Whixley and really felt my roots. Through the years there have been several spellings of the name Daniel i.e. Danyell, Danniell, Daniell and Daniel. I have written the names as they were recorded in the records I found. I am starting this page with a few very old records of Daniels who I have not yet fitted into my tree.

Bridt (Bridgit) Daniel married Robert Pickard in October 1575 in Whixley. Her, I assume sister, Catherine Danniell married Gregory Marmaduke in Whixley in 1578.

A John Daniel was buried in Spofforth Yorkshire in 1598. He may have been the father of William and George here below.

The wills of a Thomas (of OverTabley), Lawrence (of Stockport), Alexander (weaver of Stockport), and George Daniel were registered in the Diocese of Cheshire in 1575, 1588, 1591 and 1592 respectively. Although Cheshire on the west and East-Riding on the eastern border of Northern England, these wills are interesting as these Daniels were Yeomen. Also the names Thomas, Lawrence and George were first names frequently given to Daniel men over the years. (A husbandman is one that ploughs and cultivates land – historically in England, a small land owner with a status below a Yeoman. A Yeoman being a landholder with a status between gentry and labourers.)

William Danniell (c1574 – ? ) and Margery Brough (? -)

William and Margery were married on 17th of November 1594 in Whixley. William may have been **George Daniel my 11x great grandfather’s brother. A William Danyell was buried on the 11th July 1598 in Spofforth, Yorkshire (West Riding), England. (Borthwick Institute for Archives).

**George Danniell (1575 – ?1672) and ** Mrs Danniell

George was my 11 x great grandfather! He had three children, Marie (baptized 2.11.1600), **George (baptized 2.7.1603) and Frances (baptized 16.1.1607). All three children were baptized in Spofforth, Yorkshire.

A George Danyell married Agnes Malcus on the 27th April 1589 in Goxhill, Yorkshire.

A George Daniell was buried in Spofforth, Yorkshire on the 5th May 1672. If this is the same George , then he lived to the very ripe old age of 97 years. Another George Daniell, was buried in Whixley in 1660. If this was “my George” then he died aged 85 which seems a bit more plausible.

**George Danniell (1603 – 1656) and **Elizabeth Sumerton (1607 – 1688)

George, son of George Daniel (b 1575), was born on the 29th June 1603 in Whixley and baptized on the 2nd July in Spofforth. He had two siblings; Francis and Marie. He married Elizabeth Summerton (baptized 27.1.1606 in Whixley) on 26th November 1637. A George Daniell, son of George Daniell was buried in Whixley in 1656. If this was George (b 1603), then he died aged 53 years.

  • George and Elizabeth had 5 children;
  • Anna (born 1.4.1639 – 15.4.1639, died young aged 2 weeks),
  • **Thomas (born 20.9.1640 – 1687),
  • Nicholas (born 27.1.1643, baptized 2.2.1643)
  • George (born 4.8.1645 and baptized 10.8.1645). He could also have been the George referred to in the death notice of 1656. In that case he died young aged 11 years.

Elizabeth was the only child of **Thomas Summerton (c1579 – ?) of Spofforth Yorkshire and **Issabell Canward (1582- 1605), who married in the 6th May 1604. Thomas’s siblings were Lawrence and John (baptized 25.5.1577). Thomas’ father was **John Summerton (born 1540 – ?), making him my 12 x great grandfather!.

**Thomas Daniell (1640 – 1687) and **Margaret Shaw (1642 – )

**Thomas was born and baptized on the 2nd September 1640 and died in 1687 aged 47 years. His parents were George Daniell (born 1603) and Elizabeth Sumerton (born c1606). His siblings were Anne, Nicholas and George (see above). He married Margaret Shaw (1642 – ?) on the 2nd August 1666 in Whixley.

**Richard Daniell (1671 – 1712) and **??Anne Browne (? – ?)

Richard Daniell of Whixley was born on the 7th January 1671, baptized on the 17th March 1672 and died on 30th April 1712. Richard’s parents were **Thomas Daniell and **Margaret Shaw and his siblings were George, Thomas and Elize.

Richard and his wife had 8 children. A Richard Daniel married Anne Browne on 8th October 1689 in Coxwold York. This is more than a year after my 8x great grandfather **Lawrence had been born (27.7.1688). Richard would have been 17 years old when Lawrence was born.

**Lawrence Daniell (1688 – 1724) and **Anne Kettlewell (1687 – ?)

Lawrence Daniell (baptized 27.7.1688 – 12.4.1724 aged 36 years) married Anne Kettlewell (baptized 21.3.1687 – ?) on the 20th November 1707. Anne’s father was **Peter Kettlewell, also of Whixley. Anne had two siblings; Jane (born 6.4.1684) and Richard (born 29.1.1685).

**Lawrence Daniel (1720 – 1770) and **Elizabeth Gilbertson (1720 – 1805).

Lawrence Daniel (born 28.12.1720, baptized 20.1.1721 – 16.1.1770) of Whixley was the 5th child of Lawrence Daniell (1688 -1724) and Anne Kettlewell. He married **Elizabeth Gilbertson (1720 – 1805) of Rockliff on 3.6.1724 at Aldborough, Yorkshire (near York). Elizabeth was the daughter of **Andrew Gilbertson (born c1700) and **Elizabeth Earl (born c1700), who married on the 20th April 1724 at Aldborough.

    • 1) Thomas, (baptized 30.6.1745 – 6.12.1817), married Elizabeth Atkinson (1750 – 20.8.1837) on 11.12.1770.
    • 2) Lawrence, (baptized 21.4.1747 – 1823 aged 76 years), married Hannah Thwait (1755 – 25.8.1795, aged 40 years), on the 8th April 1776.
      • Lawrence was the father of William (( born and baptized 28.3.1788 – 19.6.1865). His gravestone and portrait are shown below.
        • They had a daughter Ann, baptized 1.8.1797, who married Joseph Bailey of Little Ouseburn on the 16.1.1798 and died on the 21.11.1853. Her gravestone is shown below, under that of her parents. She is recorded as the only daughter of Lawrence and Hannah, yet another Ann, daughter of Lawrence, was baptized on the 30.8.1776, just 4 months after Lawrence and Hannah were married. It is possible that this was the daughter of another Lawrence Daniel, or that this baby died.

**Andrew Daniel (1755 – ?) and **Ann Chapman (? – ?)

Andrew Daniel was born on the 1st November 1755 and baptized on the 6th November in that same year. He was a husbandman, from Whixley. Andrew married Ann Chapman in Whixley on the 22nd April 1784. Andrew and his wife had 10 children, **Lawrence was the 5th child.

  • Children of Andrew Daniel and Ann Chapman
    • 1) John, (born 2.7.1783). He married Ann (1783 – 28.12.1809 aged 27 years). Her gravestone can be seen below left.
    • 2) Thomas, (21.7.1786 – 6.5.1860), married Mary (c1793 – 16.1.1874) and had a son George (born c1828) and Lawrence born in 1827. Their grave can be seen below right, and that of their son Lawrence further on.
    • 3) Elizabeth (baptized 16.1.1790 – May 1834)
    • 4) Andrew, (born and baptized 25.5.1788). An Andrew from Whixley married Frances Holmes of Whixley on the 25th November 1813. An Andrew Daniel of Whixley married Frances Robinson of Bilbrough on the 20th January 1820. An Andrew and Frances were still living together in 1851 in Whixley according to the 1851 census – Frances was 57 years old (born c1794). and Andrew 61 years, making his birth year c1790. Another Andrew Daniel from Whixley (60 years – born c1791) was living in Spofforth with his wife Frances (66 years – born c1785 in Stillingfleet). Andrew and Frances’ children were:

      • Elizabeth, baptized on the 17.12.1818.
      • Jane, (baptized 1822 in Spofforth – 1836), who died young. Her gravestone can be seen above right. Note that her gravestone says she was the only daughter of Andrew and Frances, yet 4 girls are listed here.

    • 10) Hannah, (baptized 3.5.1801), married George Rhodes on 10.4.1823 , in the presence of Elizabeth Carmont and Major Graham

**Lawrence Daniel (1792 – after 1871) and **Mary Darbyshire (1797 – after 1871)

Lawrence Daniel of Whixley was born on the 17th January 1792 to Andrew Daniel and his wife. “Lawrence Daniel and Mary Darbyshire both of the same Parish were married in this Church (Whixley) on the 28th of October 1817 in the presence of John Daniel and Wilkinson Bruney?.”

    • 1) Mary, born 11.3.1818, baptized 17.5.1818, married George Benson of Alborough, son of Francis Benson, on 11.11.1843 at Whixley in the presence of George Simpson and Mary Daniel

    • 3) Ann, born 13.8.1822, married Jhonas Manson, son of John Man(/w)son on 27.11.1844
    • 4) Elizabeth (Bessie), baptized 4.4.1825
    • 5) John, born 13.2.1826, baptized 11.2.1827, died 20.10.1901 – married Jane Ann ( 1836 – 24.12.1903). They lived at 29 St Paul’s Square, York. Their gravestone can be seen below.
    • 6) Hannah, baptized 6.1.1829, died 15.1.1829 died young aged 9 days.
    • 7) Richard, baptized 11.7.1830, married Margaret Cryer (21 years), daughter of Thomas Cryer on 5.1.1854 in the presence of William Robinson and Jos. Thomas
    • 8) **Hannah, baptized 3.6.1832, married **William Robinson, died 3.1.1908
    • 9) Sarah, baptized 24.11.1833, married Hugh Powell (38 years), son of Samuel Powell of Leeds on 21.7.1860
    • 10) Lawrence, born 16.4.1837, married Mary Ann on 8.2.1861. The gravestone of a Lawrence Daniel and wife Mary Ann is shown below, however based on the text thereon, this Lawrence was born in 1827 and thus was the son of Thomas Daniel.
    • 11) William, born 23.11.1839, married Rebecca Ellen and had son William on 25.11.1860 according to research of the McDougall sisters. The family can be traced through the 1861, 1871 and 1881 census. There is also a death record of a William Daniel born c1840 who died Jan-Feb-Mar 1882. However, in the Church of Ascension churchyard in Whixley I found a William Daniel 1839-1862 who died aged 23 years. His wife Annie who died 26th July 1860, aged 25 years and their daughter Elizabeth Annie who died August 1860 aged three months are also in that grave. Their gravestone can be seen below. These must have been two different William Daniels.

The 1841 England & Wales Census recorded the families of Lawrence (b1792) and Mary and of Thomas (b1786) and Sarah living in the Parish of Whixley on the same page (13/5). Lawrence (then 50 years old) and Mary (44 years)’s family is listed third on the left. Lawrence’s occupation is listed as “”AgLab” – agricultural labourer. Their children are listed as Richard (11years), Hannah (8 years), Sarah (7 years), Lawrence (5 years) and William (2 years).

The household of Thomas Daniel, a 55 year old farmer, and his wife Sarah (48 years) can be seen at the top left. Their son (implied) George (13 years) and John Daniel (1761-1846) then 80 years old were also living there. I cannot decipher the profession of John Daniel who’s gravestone can be seen above. He is most likely the father of Thomas. He was one of twins born in 1761 to Lawrence Daniel (1720 – 1770) and Elizabeth Gilbertson. He died in 1846.

In 1851 the 58 year old Lawrence (b 1792) is listed as a “shepherd” and ”servant”. The 19 year old Hannah was living with him, along with 15 year old Hannah Cartwright from Whixley, 15 year old Joseph Yates from Tockwith and 18 year old John Walls from Ripon. He is also listed as an agricultural labourer living in another house with his 55 year old wife Mary born in Hammerton, 27 year old Bessie, 12 year old William and his 6 year old granddaughter Ann. The census of 1871 records a 79 year old Lawrence Daniel, agricultural labourer living in Whixley with his wife Mary now 75 years old. It also records her as being born in 1796 in Green Hammerton, Yorkshire.

**George Darbyshire (1766 – ?) and **Sarah Darbyshire (? – 4.6.180_)

Mary Darbyshire was born on the 7th of June 1797. Her parents were **George (1766 – ?), also a husbandman, and **Sarah Darbyshire (? – 4.6.180_) who married in 1786. Mary’s 6 siblings were: Ann (born 14.12.1788), Sarah (born 26.5.1790), Elizabeth (born 15.6.1791, married James Slater on 25.1.1811), Peter (born 20.12.1792), Joshua (born 11.11.1798, married Mary Anne) and James (born 14.12.1800).

Joshua Darbyshire (Mary’s brother) and Mary Anne had 7 children: James (born 19.12.1822), Francis Ellis (born 7.8.1831), William (born 28.7.1833), Joshua (born 13.7.1835), Ann (born 7.11.1840) and twins Thomas and Ann (born 27.11.1842). Ann (aged 22) married Thomas Kendal (aged 20) in August 1862, in the presence of John Kendal (? father of Thomas) and Joshua Darbyshire.
