**Robert Eldergill (1815 – 1875) and **Ann/ Elizabeth Ann Goulden (1813 – 1852)

NOTE: ** denotes a direct descendent of mine in this text

**Robert Eldergill was born on the 3rd February 1815 and christened on the 21st May of that same year at Saint Leonard, Shoreditch. London, England. He was the son of **Thomas Eldergill, (Eldercill in the records), and **Francis. The name Eldergill is spelt several ways in the archives, including Eldercill, Eldergel and Aldergel. Robert died in London at the age of 61 in 1875.

Robert Eldergill is said to have married **Ann Goulden (1817 -1852), daughter of **William Goulden. I have found no marriage record for Robert, but there are marriage records for Ann Gouldens. There was an Ann Goulding that was married between October and December in 1837 in St. George Southwark who fits, but her spouse is not listed. In the previous page documenting the Goulden lineage (See Goulden), I have already alluded to my uncertainty regarding the identity of “Ann” in the section dealing with **William Shrobb Goulden (Christened 1796 – 1855) and **Ann Street (1793 – ?) who are presumed to be Ann’s parents.

According to the 1851 census, the Eldergill family lived at 18 ½ Pearson Street, St Leonard Shoreditch, Middlesex, England. Robert is listed there as being a French Polisher – someone who uses a wood finishing technique resulting in a high gloss surface. Note that his wife is listed as Elizabeth and not Ann and her place of birth is given as Tha???, Essex, England and not Canterbury, Kent.

The text is very difficult to read and the birth place may be misspelt, I think it fits the best with Theydon Mount a civil parish and village in the Epping Forest of Essex County. The name is thought to mean “the valley where thatch grows”. Theydon Mount – Wikipedia

Also Elizabeth is listed as a year older than Robert making their respective birth years circa 1813 and 1814 and not 1817 and 1815. Robert was born in February 1815 so an estimate of 1814 possible.

There are several possible explanations for this Ann – Elizabeth confusion :-

  1. Ann died and Robert remarried Elizabeth, (possibly Elizabeth Merryday 1813-1852 according to some family trees)
  2. Elizabeth Ann/ Ann Elizabeth was Robert’s wife’s complete name
  3. Robert had two “wives” concurrently.

If he did marry twice, or have two partners, then which child is from which woman? This is important as my mitochondrial DNA came form the mother of **Maria Patience Eldergill daughter of Robert Eldergill.

There is an Ann Eldergill who died on November 4th 1838 in Saint Leonard, Shoreditch, London, England, but her parents are listed at William Edward and Sarah Francis Eldergill, so she is not our Ann. If Ann died in 1838, then the first two children born to Robert are hers and this is supported by documentation. However, Ann is also recorded as the mother of Thomas Saxton born in 1842, so I think Ann and Elizabeth are likely to be one and the same, or indeed that Robert may have had two partners!.

There is also a record for an Elizabeth Goulden, daughter of William Goulden and Maria, (not Ann, maybe she was Maria Ann/ Mary Ann? – See Goulden section William Shrobb Goulden (Christened 1796 – 1855) and Ann Street (1793 – ?)). This Elizabeth Goulden was born on 12th September 1813 and christened on 28th May 1817 in Shoreditch, which could account for the confusion regarding Robert’s wife’s birth date. Furthermore, there is a record of an Elizabeth Eldergill born in 1813 who died in Shoreditch in October 1852 and was buried on the 30th October in 1852 Saint Leonard, Shoreditch, which fits the theory that Ann and Elizabeth are the same person.

Thomas Saxton Eldergill, 6th child of Ann and Robert – 1911 census – last line
He is noted to be a widower of 69, inmate and former French Polisher (like his father before him), and to have been born in Stepney, London a district in the East End of London in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.
