Goulden

Goulden Ancestry: a direct line over 15 generations?

My great-great-great- grandfather Robert Eldergill (5 generations back), is said to have married a Goulden (Robert Eldergill (1815 – 1875) and Ann/ Elizabeth Ann Goulden (1813 – 1852 ). Looking directly back as far as I could along the Goulden lineage, I found a trail of Richard Gouldens covering 15 generations. There is thus a real chance that I am directly related to a Richard Goulden from the 16th century, however the trail was difficult to follow with any certainty, and I may have taken wrong turns frequently along the way. It was often difficult to know which Richard fitted in where. The name Goulden was also recorded as Golden, Goldin, Goldings, Gaulden, and even Gouldyn over the years and one wonders if these are just spelling errors or if they indicate different families. Additionally, the early records reveal Gouldens on the west (Lancashire, Chester and Wiltshire) and east (Norfolk, Suffolk and Kent) of England suggesting that there may have been two or more original families. My route seems to travel through Kent, which is some distance from Lancashire and Chester, while Norfolk and Suffolk are closer …

The questions that arise are:

  • Am I directly descended from a Richard Goulden (and if so, then which one),
  • If not, am I directly descended from another Goulden, and
  • Are the Gouldens of Canterbury, Kent related to those of Lancashire and Cheshire?

**Richard Goulden (circa 1540 – ?)

The oldest Goulden record I found was that of the marriage of Richard Gouldyn and Eydyeth Audrye in St Edmunds, Salisbury Wiltshire, England on the 20th July 1560. I also found a record a Joan Goulden‘s christening on the 22nd February 1566 in Stratford St Mary, Suffolk, England. Her father was Richard Goulden and her mother Grace. This means that the oldest Richard Goulden that I found was born circa 1540.

**Richard Goulden (circa 1586 – 21st January 1633) and his son Richard

Richard Goulden is recorded as the father of a Richard Goulden christened on the 31st August 1606 at Saint Peter’s, Bolton, Lancashire, England. Richard “senior” would then have been born circa 1586 if we assume that he was around 20 years old when he married. Could he possibly be the son of Richard and Eydyeth? Salisbury Wiltshire and Bolton are 385km apart and Stratford St Mary and Bolton 408km which makes possible Richards mentioned above unlikely.

His origins aside, Richard “senior” produced the following 8, possibly 13 children:-

  • Saint Peter, Bolton, Lancashire Christenings:
  • **Richard Goulden christened on the 31st August 1606
  • John Goulden christened on the 5th July 1607
  • John Goulden christened on 2nd October 1608
  • James Goulden christened on 9th April 1610
  • William Goulden christened on the 8th March 1612
  • John Goulden christened on the 15th August 1613
  • Josoheff Goulden christened on the 26th September 1614
  • Mary Goulden christened on the 5th October 1615

Around that same time (another?) Richard Goulding was (also?) christening children in Warrington, 15 miles away:

  • Warrington, Lancashire Christenings:
  • Richard Goulden christened on the 31st August 1606
  • John Goulden christened on the 8th February 1611 -died 9th February 1611
  • **Richard Goulden christened on the 8th February 1611
  • Elizabeth Goulden christened on the 7th March 1613
  • Catteren Goulden christened on the 14th May 1615
  • Margreth Golden christened on the 2nd January 1620

I assume that the Johns of 1607 and 1608 died young, as the name of a deceased child was often given to subsequent children, usually with a different second name. Of note, Richard of 1606 is listed as being christened in Warrington and Bolton on the same day which makes me think that this is the same child, and that the documentation was inexact, or that Bolton was considered part of “greater” Warrington. However, there are only 5 months between the christenings of Elizabeth and John in 1613, and Catteren and Mary in 1615 which may have been done out of convenience, or might suggest that we are indeed dealing with two different families.

15 miles between Bolton and Warrington

John and Richard of 1611 were christened on the same day and in the year that their mother Jane is said to have died. Was this a twin pregnancy resulting in the death of one twin and the mother? – just a thought…

I also found christening records for another four Richard Gouldens of Warrington Lancashire: The son of Thomas Goulden, christened on March 28th 1605, the son of John Goulden, christened on the 29th September 1616, another born on the 18th February 1633 and the son of Nicholas born February 10th January 1630. Possibly Richard “senior”, John, Nicolas and Thomas were brothers ? – just another thought …

**Richard Reginald Goulden (circa 1628 – ?) and Sara Goulden born Jo(h)nson (1631 – ?)

The next generation Richard would have to have been born circa 1628. A **Richard Goulden is listed as the father of Richard Goulden born circa 1622 who was christened on the 3rd February 1622. If this is the same Richard of 1606, then Richard was 16 years old when he fathered his son Richard. There is also a record of a Richard Goulden who was christened on the 22nd February 1628 at Northenden, Cheshire, England. The distance between Warrington and Northenden is about 30km making making this Richard a contender, but he was the son of a James Goulden and not a Richard.

A **Richard (Reginald) Goulden of Northenden married Sara Jo(h)nson on the 28th March 1654. Her parents are listed as Philip Johnson and Margaret Johnson (born Strettil), and her birth place as Mobberley Cheshire, England. This means that Richard Reginald was possibly born circa 1630. This may be the same Richard mentioned above, son of James who was christened in 1628. Copy of marriage record.Richard Goulden of Northenden married Sara daughter of Phillip Johnson of Bowdon parish 28 March 1654 at Northenden, Cheshire, Eng.

Richard Reginald and Sara had a son **Richard Ross Michael Goulden (1644 – 20th November 1737), who is recorded to have been born and to have died in Canterbury, Kent, England. Burial records can be found for a Richard Goulden who died on May 14th 1685 in Ash Parish, Kent, England and another Richard who died on January 17th 1720 in Canterbury All Saints Parish, Kent. If one of these was Richard Reginald, then he traveled to the west during his lifetime.

This also means that Sara was 13 years old when she had Richard Ross and that she married 10 years later, which is possible, but seems unlikely. The christening of a Richard Goulden, son of Richard, on 4th December 1665 in Northenden, Cheshire, England is mentioned in the archives along with that of his presumed brother James on the 30th April 1668. Considering the date of the wedding and christening date, and christening location, it seems more likely that this is the son of Richard and Sara. Maybe the birth year was 1654, and not the 1644 recorded in several Goulden websites.

**Richard Ross Michael Goulden (1644 – 20th November 1737), and Elizabeth Mary (1645 – ?)

Richard Ross, son of Richard Reginald Goulden and Sara was born and died in Canterbury, Kent. He married Elizabeth Mary (1645 – ?) and they had a son **Richard Goulden (1662 – January 1719).

Above I speculated that Richard Ross’ birth year may have 1654 and not 1644. There is also Richard Goulden mentioned in the archives who was born on 6th March 1657 in Colby, Norfolk, England, to an Anne and Richard Goulden.

**Richard Goulden (1662 – 1719) and Magdaleine Coue (1658 – 1721)

Richard Goulden (3rd February 1662 – January 1719) first married Elenor Elliott (? – 1906) on the 10th October 1681. Elanor unfortunately died in Dolina, Galicja, Austria, and Richard then married Magdaleine Coue (1658 – 1st/ 13th February 1721) on the 4th April 1686. With Magdeleine he had 6 children. Their first born was Richard Goulden (3rd January 1687 – January 1757). He was christened at the now demolished All Saints Church, Canterbury, Kent. According to a FamilySearch Family Tree, Richard (born 1662), was from Saint Dunstan, Stepney, London where he also got married.

The six children of Richard and Magdeleine:

  • Richard Goulden (3rd January 1687 – January 1757)
  • Samuel Goulden (Golden) (March 1688-1744)
  • John Goulden (August 1689  – March 1746)
  • Magdaleine Goulden (February 1691 – September 1735), married Sympson
  • Elizabeth Mary Goulden (10th October 1695 – 1755), married Turner
  • Jacob Goulden (1697 – August 1781)

Before marrying Richard Goulden, Magdaleine was married to Abraham Bluse in 1677, who died in 1682. Abraham and Magdeleine had a son Isaac Bluse (1678-?) and a daughter Magdaleine Bluse (1682-?).

**John Goulden (1760 -1835) and Mary Ann Look (1759 – 1813)

John was baptized on the 6th July 1760 and subsequently married Mary Ann Look (1759 – 1813) on the 10th June/ July 1783. Mary Ann Look was born on the 16th October 1759 and christened on the 2nd December 1761 in Sturry Kent and possibly buried on 19th November 1813, also in Kent, aged then 54 years. Ten (?9) children were the product of their union. Mary Ann’s parents were John Look (1739 – ) and Mary Look (born Goodwin/ Goodwyn) (3rd December 1738 – ), who were married in Surry, Kent on the 14th July 1759. This suggests that Mary Goodwin was already pregnant with Mary Ann when she married.

Of note, and relevant as my great-great-great- grandfather Robert Eldergill, lived there, two Mary Ann Gouldens died in Shoreditch, London in 1840 and 1864 respectively. The former could also be “my” Mary Ann, and then she died aged 81 years.

  • Susanna Moulding Goulden (Goulding) (1787 – ?)
  • Catherine Maria Goulden (22nd July 1788 – 8th February 1858) – married  Hagell
  • John Goulden (1790 – 1833)
  • Richard Goulden (1792 – 1861)
  • Mary Ann Goulden (1795 -1795) – died in infancy
  • **William Shrobb Goulden (1796 – 1855)

**William Shrobb Goulden (Christened 1796 – 1855) and Ann Street (1793 – ?)

William Shrobb Goulden, the seventh child of John and Mary Ann Goulden, was christened on Christmas day (25th December) 1796 at the Holy Cross Church, Canterbury, Kent. I have no marriage date for William but if his first child was born in 1813/16, then it must have been around 1812/15, making him 16 or 19 years old when he married. He is said to have married Ann Street, yet records also mention children born to a William and a Mary Ann or Maria, possibly Ann was Mary Ann. William is said to have died in Apr-June 1855 in Holborn, London. However, I have found two records of William Gouldens who were buried in Canterbury, one in 1857 and the other in 1858 which might be more likely.

Ongoing line of descent: Goulden – Eldergill – Dawes...

The 9 or 10? possible Children of William and Ann:

  • **Elizabeth Goulden (1813/ christened 1817 – ?) mother Maria – ? married Eldergill **
  • Mary Ann Goulden (1816 -1840) mother Mary Ann
  • **Ann Goulden (1817 – 1852), – mother Elizabeth? married Eldergill **
  • William Goulden (1819 – ?)
  • Jane Goulden (Circa 1821 – 1887)
  • John Goulden (Circa 1821 – 1873)
  • Henry Goulden (1828 – ?)
  • Mary Goulden, married Vice (1834 -1891)
  • Jane Goulden (1837 – ?)
  • John Goulden (1839 – ?)

** Ann Goulden is said to have been born on the 9th November 1817 at St. Mildred’s, Canterbury, Kent, England, to William Shrobb Goulden and Ann. However I have only found a record of an Ann Goulden christened on the 14th October 1817 in Howden York. She was the child of a William Goulden and Elizabeth making her unlikely to be William Shrobb’s Ann. There was an Ann Goulden who was born on the 11th May 1818 at Saint Leonard, Shoreditch, London, but her parents were Samuel Goulden (not William) and Ann.

** Elizabeth Goulden was born on 12th September 1813 in Theydon Mount and christened on 28th May 1817 at Saint Leonard, Shoreditch, London. Her parents are listed as William Goulden and Maria (?Mary Ann).

Were Ann and Elizabeth the same person and was/ were they children of William Shrobb Goulden? Either way, one of these two, probably Elizabeth, married my great-great-great grandfather Robert Eldergill (1815-1875). This is discussed further in Robert Eldergill (1815 – 1875) and Ann/ Elizabeth Ann Goulden (1813 – 1875 )

Other William Gouldens (born circa 1775 – 1785) – A walk in Canterbury City Graveyard

I was disappointed by the paucity of old graves I found in the German graveyards while previously on a road trip looking for ancestors (In search of Carl and Wilhelmine). I have since then really enjoyed feeling the peace and presence of the past while walking through English graveyards reading the old headstones. So when in Kent in 2019, I naturally took a trip to Canterbury City Cemetery in search of Canterbury Gouldens. Having confirmed French Huguenot origins (see The Clurs (Clours) of Welschneureut (1700-1809)) I was also interested in the French Huguenots who fled to Canterbury. Among the old graves I found several Lefevres, but no Clurs. However, I did find the graves of Emily and Frederick Herbert Orchard, William Stears (family namesakes, or possible relatives?) (see Barker Family, Mary Ann Stears (1820 – 1903) and George Adolphus Cusens (1819 – 1911) and William Barker (1875-1948) and Beatrice Emily Jane Cusens) and a Staines family who may have been descendants of Catherine Levine Stains who married Richard Goulden in 1708.

I had been wondering if William Shrobb Goulden really was “my” William Goulden. There were contemporary William Gouldens also born to a John and Mary/ Mary Ann, that could also fit the bill. A William Golden christened  on the 10th May 1778 in Birling, Kent (possibly born too late) was one, and another was christened on the 3rd September 1795 in St James’, Westminster, Middlesex. He was the son of Jno Goulden and Mary Danby and is particularly interesting as an alternative considering their place of residence close to that of my great-great-great grandfather Robert Eldergill (Robert Eldergill (1815 – 1875) and Ann/ Elizabeth Ann Goulden (1813 – 1875 )).

There are records of 2 William Gouldens buried in Canterbury, one on Aug 16 1816 and another on Feb 4th 1916. Both are not “my” William as the one died “too early” and the other is “too young”.

Another contender is William Goulden (21st March 1782 – 14th April 1851). He married Hannah Lepine (1780- 9th May 1826) in 1812. Could this be “my” William and wife “Anna”? He was buried at the now demolished All Saints in Canterbury (Cemetery ID: 2361860) along with his wife and their baby Mary Goulden 1821-1822. The inscription on the tombstone said “Sacred to the memory of William Goulden who died April 14th 1851 aged 69 years, Also of Hannah wife of the above who died May 9th 1826 aged 46 years, Also of Mary infant daughter of above who died in the year 1822 aged 5 months”. William Goulden (1782-1851) – Find a Grave Memorial.

William’s parents were Samuel Goulden (1744-1817) and Eleanor Tomlin Goulden (1747 -1818.) They were buried in the Holy Cross Churchyard, Canterbury. Their headstone says “In Memory of Samuel Goulden late of this Parish who died February 8, 1817 aged 73 Years, Also of Eleanor his Wife who died September 5, 1818 aged 71 Years. They left surviving 6 Children (viz) Margaret, Thomas, Samuel, William, Francis and Henry.” (Memorial ID 7836477). William’s sister Margaret Goulden (1771-1834) was also buried in the same graveyard. The inscription on her grave is “In Memory of Margaret Goulden, Late of this Parish. She departed this life Octr 6th 1834, Aged 63 Years, Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints. Psalm 116. ver.15

William was a cabinetmaker. His son, Charles Goulden (11th March 1813 – 8th May 1865) was his apprentice and worked for his father as a carpenter and decorator until William’s retirement in 1846. Charles inherited from an ancestor in 1835, married Marry Ann Barker (1814 – 1896) (another family namesake) in 1839, and took a small stationary shop in Guildhall Street Canterbury. His wife ran the shop, which was so successful that Charles decided to concentrate on bookselling after his father retired. By 1855, Charles was a bookseller, stationer, music-seller, printer, and a small-scale publisher with a good line in children’s books. He was the first Goulden to own a newspaper. Charles went on to become Mayor of Canterbury in 1878 and a respected Alderman. Charles Goulden (1813-1865) – Find a Grave Memorial and Gouldens of Canterbury, Kent (machadoink.com)

Charles Goulden died aged 52 years a respected citizen of Canterbury, and was buried to the left of the main gate of the Canterbury City Cemetery so his grave can’t be missed. His wife is buried with him and their son Henry James Goulden (1850 – 1937) is buried near his father, to the left under a tree. There is also another Henry James Goulden (1851 17th March 1937) buried at the same cemetery (Plot E, Grave 412 Memorial ID 237728694), but this was not Charles’ son.

If I am honest, the grave of “little Wilfred”, in front of that of Charles’, who “fell asleep” when only 4 months old, was the one that really caught my attention. This was especially poignant as I was accompanied by Wilfried Visser who has endured walking through many graveyards with me even though the people I seek have no genetic ties to him.

And then of course, one must not forget young 7118 Private C. Barker (another family namesake) of the Northamptonshire regiment, who also lies in the Canterbury City Cemetery. He survived the horrors of the first world war (28 July 1914 to 11 November 1918), only to succumb on the 11th December 1918 aged 27, a strange irony. Was he possibly a victim of the Spanish ‘flu only becaming ill upon his return home?
