The Clurs (Clours) of Welschneureut (1699-1860)

The origins of my great-great-grandfather, Johann Michael Clur (1830-1902), have long been a mystery. I had already managed to establish that he came to South Africa between January and February 1857 as a British German Legionary and as far as we know, a bachelor. After I requested a copy of his death certificate from the National Archives of South Africa, I was able (with the help of Wilfried Visser), to decipher that Johann Michael was born in “Welscheneireit near Carlsruhe Baden Germany”. Johann Michael Clur – 1830-1902

Extract form the death certificate of Johann Michael Clur (1830-1902). His birth place is given as Welscheneireit near Carlsruhe Baden Germany

This gave me a place to start looking. A genealogical friend of mine once said, “when stuck, go for a road trip”. In this case a boat trip along the Palatinate part of the Rhine River on a drizzly day, listening to stories of castles built and destroyed, and the siren at Loreley luring captains to sink their ships as they sailed by, all helped to conjure up some nostalgia and motivation. By chance, while having lunch in St. Goarshausen and wondering how far Welschneureut was from where we were, and if a visit would be feasible, I happened upon a book documenting the church records of Welschneureut between 1699 and 1809. This book has proven invaluable in my reconstruction of the Welschneureut Clur family tree. With its help I managed to trace the Clurs back 10 generations to Clorius Clur from Bern, Switzerland and his son Nicolas Clour who married Susanna Clour, born T(h)ibaud(t). Her family was part of the colony of Neureut. Welschneureut Church Records. Welschneureut Germany 1700-1809 by Cathryn S. Dippo. Neureut in Germany can trace its origin back to 1260 having been founded during the rule of Rudolf I, Margrave of Baden-Baden. Being located on the Rhine River it was vulnerable to plundering and invasions by soldiers which occurred on numerus occasions over the years, especially in the 17th century. Not only the Thirty Years War (1618-1648) but also the War of Palatine Succession in the latter part of the century, caused many to flee leaving the village essentially abandoned. As a consequence, Markgraf Friedrich Magnus invited the persecuted, French speaking Calvinists-Huguenots, Walloons and Waldensians to help repopulate the land. In 1699, 58 families arrived. Their colony was called Welschneureut to distinguish it from the original German-speaking village which became Teutschneureut. By the early 19th century Welschneureut had 291 inhabitants and Teutschneureut 625. In 1835 they were incorporated into one municipal entity. Between 1699-1809, 12 pastors worked in Welschneureut, the first two were French, the next eight Swiss, and then two came from Palatine. This means that the church documentation is in different languages and dialects, abbreviations were often used and the spelling is inconsistent. I have tried to record the spelling as it was recorded, so variation may be seen within the description of the same person. In the French era the surname was written as CLOUR, but this later become CLUR and KLUR, and on occasion CLOURS, CLAIR, CLOUS and CLAUS was recorded, (maybe the latter were transcription/ notation errors). Females were frequently given an additional ‘in’ at the end of their surnames in registrations, so that the names CLOURIN and KLURIN appear often. CLÜR can be seen in some records after 1800. Names of people changed in the entries according to the language used so that for example, Jean Henri Clour in the French period became Johann Heinrich Clour in the Swiss period, making it difficult to be sure one was dealing with the same person. Also, not infrequently the second name was used and not the first name in a seemingly arbitrary way.

The first church and parsonage in Welschneureut was probably built in 1712 – “l’Eglises Reformée de Mahlberg et Neüreüth Teres”. In 1724 the colonists created their own cemetery. From November 1699 till 1700 their dead were buried in Mühlburg and from 1700 to 1724 in Teutschnuereut. At the South Cemetery in Welschneureut some French (Waldensian) surnames can still be seen including Clour. Friedrichstal church, in the village of Friedrichstal, was not very far from Welschnuereut and some Cl(o)urs are also documented in that church’s records, as marriages between the villages were not uncommon. http://www.peter-hartleb.de/Exkursionen/Karlsruhe/Neureut/Neureut.html See also Visiting Welschneureut and Friedrichstal

NOTE: ** denotes my direct relatives in the following text

I believe that **Clorius Clour (c. 1670 – ?) is my direct ancestor going back 10 generations, with a line of descent as follows:-

Clorius Clour (c.1670-?) -> Nicolas Clour (c.1690-1724) –> Henry Jacob Clour (c.1720-1753) –> Christian Clour (1750-1794) -> Johann Michael Clour (1780-1825) -> Catharina Clour(1806-1848) -> Johann Michael Clur (1830-1902) -> Carl Friedrich Clur (1861-1913) -> Alwin Bernard Clur (1907-1987) -> Dennis Alwin Clur (1930-2003) -> Sally-Ann Clur (1963 to present).

In the following text the following families will be discussed:

  1. **Nicolas Clour (c. 1690 – 1724) and **Susanna Tibaud (?1692-1757).
  2. ** Henry (Jacob) Clour (c. 1720-1753) and **Anne Marie Rothacker
  3. ** Christian Clour (1750 – 1794), (son of Henry (Jacob) Clour (c. 1720-1753)), and **Johana Margaretha Crocol (Crocollin)
  4. Joh. Heinrich Clour (Ev. Ref) (1754 – 1800), (son of Henry (Jacob) Clour (c. 1720-1753)), and Catharina (Kathrina) Barbara Grossmännin (Ev. Luth) (c. 1756 – 29th June 1803)
  5. Christian Clour (1774 – 1846), (son of Christian Clour (1750 – 1794)), and Mar. Margaretha Buchleiterin (? – ?)
  6. ** Johann Michaël Clour (1780 – 1825), (son of Christian Clour (1750 – 1794)), and **Katarina Raupin (c.1782 – ?)
  7. ** Catharina Clour (1806-1848), (daughter of Johann Michael Clour (1780 – 1825)).(See also **Johann Michael Clur – 1830-1902)
  8. Johann Michael Clour (1814 – 1867), (son of Johann Michael Clour (1780 – 1825)), and Katarina Boeuf (1818 – 1837)

**Nicolas Clour (c. 1690 – 1724) and **Susanna Tibaud (?1692-1757).

**Nicolas (Nicolaus) Clour and his wife **Susanna Clour born Tibaud(t) /Tibaat/Fibaud/Tilband/Tiband lived in Welschneureut. Nicolas was the son of **Clorius Clur a “native” of the Canton of Bern (Switzerland). Nicolas married Susanne, daughter of **Jean Pierre Thibaut and **Eva his wife, of the colony of Neyret, on the 27th June 1713 in Friedrichstal. (Page 77 of Book 1 of the Friedrichstal Church Records). Eva(e)’s surname was Colom(b)/ Conloms.

Copy of the original documentation of the marriage of Nicolas Clour and Susanne Thibaut, 27th June 1713.

Susanna’s family was one of the original 58 families that came to Welschneureut in 1699. Her father, Jean Pierre Thibaut‘s name is listed as number 13 in a list of original Waldesian families that settled in Welschneureut that can be seen on the corner of Neureut Hauptstrasse and Welschneureuterstrasse today. No Clour can be found in that list. Number 57 is listed as “unknown”, so one wonders if this could have been Clorius Clour’s family. However, as his son Nicolas married in the Friedrichstal Church, this may suggest that his family resided there and not in Welschneureut. Oskar Hornung, in his book Friedrichstal Geschichte einer Hugenotten-Gemeinte page 167, suggests that Clorius Clour lived some years in Bern, and lists the name Clour as a Waldesian name among the early settlers in Friedrichstal on page 169. Friedrichstal was established at the end of 1699. This makes me believe that Clorius Clur was one of the second wave of Huguenots who fled France mostly from the Dauphin, Cévennes and Languedoc regions, before and after the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685 by Louis XIV. This act prohibited the existence of Protestant worship in France. The refugees arrived in Switzerland initially, where they were granted asylum in Helvetian cantons such as Zurich and Bern, however they were later relocated to Germany, Holland and England.

I do not know Nicolas’ birth date, but I think he must have been born circa 1690. Nicolas died on the 28th December 1724 and was buried the next day. Another record says that he died on the 27th February 1725 and was buried the next day. Yet another gives his date of death and burial as the 8th and 9th September 1721 respectively. Somewhere herein lies the truth. I am lead to believe that Susanna was born in 1692 and died in 1757. Together, they had at least 10, possibly 11 children.

Children of Nicolas Clour and Susanna Thibaud:

  1. Anne (19th September 1715 – ? before March 1716)
    • Christened on first Sunday after her birth, Godparents: “N.N.”
    • Born November according to Deutschland, ausgewählte evangelische Kirchenbücher 1500-1971. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QPDB-PY8Q. This seems unlikely considering the birth of the next Anne in March 1716.
  2. Anne (March 1716 – ? before 1717)
    • Deutschland, ausgewählte evangelische Kirchenbücher 1500-1971. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QPDB-PY8Q
  3. Anne Barb (1717 – 25th August 1740, aged 25)
    • Christened March 1717
    • Buried 26th August 1740, (or 26th October according to Deutschland, ausgewählte evangelische Kirchenbücher 1500-1971. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QPDB-PY8Q : 19 May 2023
    • Note: it appears that Anne Barb may have died during her lying-in period after childbirth.
    • Her newborn illegitimate daughter Anne Barbe was christened 25th August 1740. The father was recored as “Un Grenadier”. Godparents present were: Henry Charles Renaud, son of Paul Renaud of Welschneureut, George Wilhelm Albrecht, Barb Albrecht and a Swiss girl. Anne Brab’s daughter died on the 16th September and was buried on the 17th September 1740. Note: These dates don’t match up as the baby was 24 hours old when she died, possibly then the child died in August, or her mother died in September.
  4. Christian (April 1718 – 3rd August 1767) –
    • Christened in 1720, Godfather: Christian Rothacker. He was baptized in April 1718 according to Deutschland, ausgewählte evangelische Kirchenbücher 1500-1971, https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QPDB-PY8Q.
    • Participated in the 1751 Easter communion.
    • Christian married Marie Racine (c. 1712-1778) on the 10th September 1739. He was described as born and resident in Welschneureut. Marie was described as the legitimate daughter of Jean Pierre Racin also living in Welschneureut and a member of the Church of Neüreüt.
    • Their daughter, Susanne Marguerit(h)e (9th March 1743 – 12th February 1786), was christened on the 17th March 1743. Godparents: Henry Charles Renaud, Susanne Racine, Frederic Durand and Rachel Margrithe Racine. She also participated in 1751 Easter communion. She married Hans Georg Buchleiter a (?black)smith and they had 4 daughters. She was a house wife and died aged 45 years. She was buried on the 14th February 1786.
    • Christiaan died at the age of 49 years and 6 months
    • He was buried on the 6th August 1767.
    • Jeanne Marie Racine, Christian’s widow, died on the 30th December 1778 at the age of 66 years, 2 months and 3 days. She was buried on the 31st December 1778.
  5. Marie Barbe (May 1719 – ?)
    • Christened 1719, Godfather: Christian Rothacker
  6. ** Henri Jacob (Henry Jaques/ Heinrich) (circa 1720 -1753)
    • Christened 19th May 1720; Godparents: **Jacob Rothacker and Henry N.N and Jeanne Tibaud
    • See **Henry (Jaques) Clour (c. 1720-1753) and **Anne Marie Rothacker below)
  7. Jean Phillipe  (8th September 1721 – 8th September 1721)
    • Christened 1721; Godfather: Jean Phillipe
    • Buried 9th September 1721.
    • Note: he was 6 weeks old when he died, so the given birth date may be incorrect, possibly he was born end July 1721?
  8. Catherine (July 1722 – ?)
    • Christened 1722; Godparents: Jean Phillipe and his wife
  9. Francois CLAIR (1722 – ?)
    • Note: no mother mentioned
  10. “Un enfant” Anne (21st February 1723 – ?)
    • Christened 27th February 1723, Godparents: Abraham Baraire and Anne Calmet Fille
  11. Jean Abraham (April 1724 – ?)
    • Christened April 1724. Godparents: Abraham Guillot and his wife, and Jean Calmet and Marguerithe Pansû

A daughter of Nicolas and Susanna died on the 27th February 1725 and was buried on the 28th. This could have been one of the Anne’s, probably “un enfant” Anne, but could also have been the Anne of 1715 or 1716, or Catherine.

There is also mention of an Anne Barbe Christened 27th August 1736, born to Anne Clour and Jean Noe Bellet; Godparents: Jaques Louis Racine, Anne Crocol and Christian Clour. This suggests that one of the Annes of 1715, 1716 or 1723 survived childhood, or that this was also a child of Anne Barb.

A Thomas Clour’s, (former inhabitant of Neret) widow, Catharine Preis married Martin Ritz, widow and resident of Friedrichstal, on the 7th August 1736 in Friedrichstal (Page 93 of Book 1 of the Friedrichstal Church Records). One wonders if Thomas was Nicolas’ brother, or possibly his uncle.

    • Jean Henry’s father died before his birth.
    • He died at the age of 46 years and 11 months.
    • Buried on the 24th December 1800.

“Spurie” Maria Magdalena (23rd December 1766 – 26th December 1766 and buried 27th December 1766) and Maria Catharina (23rd December 1766 – 27th December 1766 and buried 28th December 1766), were illegitimate twins born to widow Anne Marie Clour and Michael Gutknecht, a day labourer from Alsace. The babies were christened on the 24th December 1766. The godparents were Zacharie Beouf, Hans Georg Dunklin, Magdalena Lipphartin and Catharina Wumin. Anne Marie later married Michael Gutknecht.

** Christian Clour (1750 – 1794), (son of **Henry (Jacob) Clour (c. 1720-1753)), and **Johana Margaretha Crocol (Crocollin)

Christian was born on the 13th September 1750 and christened on the 15th September 1750. His godparents were Christian Clour and his wife Jean Marie Racine. He worked as an attorney and judge, as well as a carpenter. Christian, was described as “the bereaved son of **Heinrich Clous” when he married Margaretha, daughter of **Jean Crocols, on the 11th March 1773. He had 13 children with **Johana Margaretha Crocol (Crocollin/ Crocolin), 8 of whom died in childhood. Christian died on the 19th March 1794 at the age of 43 years, 6 months and 6 days of “Faulfieber” (foul fever) or Typhus. He was buried on the 21st March 1794. Looking at the death records it appears that there was an outbreak of Typhus in 1794 in Welschneureut.

Children of Christian Clour and Johana Margaretha Crocol:

  1. Johanna Margaretha (22nd March 1774 – 29th March 1773)
    • Christened 25th March 1774, Godparents: Georg Crocol and wife Marg. Barb. Bek, Andres Angelberger and wife Rosina Schnürlein.
    • Died aged 8 days. Note the inconsistency of the years. Possibly the birth and christening years should be 1773, not 1774. Cathryn Dippo made a similar comment in her book. This makes more sense considering that Christian was born in May 1774.
    • Buried 30th March 1773.
  2. Christian (16th May 1774 – 23rd April 1846)
    • Christened 20th May 1774, Godparents: Georg Crocol and wife Barbara Bek. NB: Mother is noted as Jean Marg Crocol. Note children too close together in birth dates or birth dates are incorrect.

Katarina Barbara Grossmännin was the illegitimate child of Maria Catarina Matthesin of Güglingen and a Mr. Grossmänn. Katarina was married to Heinrich Clour for 21 years. Together they had 3 children, who all died. This meant that when she died, on Wednesday 29th June 1803 at 3 o’clock in the morning, at the age of 47 years, the family fortune fell to her heirs. She gave the Reformed Church 50 fl on the condition that they accept a Lutheran. After having confessed, she was buried in the local churchyard in Neureuth next to her husband, who was a Reformist. She bequeathed a baptismal kit to the local Lutherens and it was kept at the local Townhouse.

Christian Clour (1774 – 1846), (son of **Christian Clour (1750 – 1794)), and Mar. Margaretha Buchleiterin (? – ?)

Christian Clour was the legitimate son of **Christian Clours and **Jeanne Margretha born Croccollin. He was born on the 16th May 1774 and died on the 23rd April 1846. He married Maria Margaretha Buchleiterin, the legitimate daughter of Hs (?Hans) Gerg Buchleiters and Susanna Margr. born Clourin, on the 13th March 1798. Christian was described as a “carpenter and churchwarden.”

Children of Christian Clour and Maria Margaretha Buchleiterin:-

  1. Christian (28th August 1799 – 31st January 1800)
    • Christened 29th August 1799, Godparents: Danj Marche and his wife.
    • Died at the age of 5 months and 3 days of “Blater”, Smallpox
    • Buried on the 1st February 1800
  2. Christian (24th May 1801 – 10thJanuary 1769)
    • Christened 25th May 1801, Godparents: Danjel Marche, Christof Weinhart and their wives, Johann Clour, Barabara Grossin.
    • NOTE: 1769 is not possible as his date of death, I think possibly 1869 was meant.
  3.  Johann (21st August 1803 – ?)
    • Christened 23th August 1803, Godparents: Daniel Marche (brother in law of the child’s father), Kristoph Weinhard and their respective wives Catarina (sister of the child’s mother) and Maria born Erbin from Hagsveld.
    • NOTE: marked as deceased.
  4.  Heinrich (14th March 1807 at midday – 25th March 1836)
    • Christened 15th March 1807, Godparents: Anna Maria Weinhartin, widow of Christoph Weinhart, **Johann Clour local citizen and carpenter, brother of the child’s father, his wife **Catarina Raupin, and Danial Marche local citizen and brother in law of the father of the child.
  5. Katharina Clour (? – 1810).
  • Welschneureut Church Records. Pages 212; 217; 441; 454; 464; 490

** Johann Michaël Clour (1780 – 1825), (son of **Christian Clour (1750 – 1794)), and **Katarina Raupin (c.1782/7 – 31 Aug 1854)

**Johann Michaël was born on the 21st February 1780 at 11 o’clock in the night and christened on the 25th February 1780. His godparents were Georg Crocol and wife, and Michael Gutknecht, **Cathrina Crocol born Albrecht. He died on the 3rd August 1825 at the age of 44 years. Of note the name Clur (Clour) is used on his death record.

On Tuesday 13th March 1804 **Johann Michaël Clur, “an aspiring citizen and master carpenter”, the legitimate son of **Christian Clour, former local advocate, and **Joanna Margaretha, born Crocoll, married **Katarina Raupin from Rintheim (Lutheren), the legitimate unmarried daughter of **Jacob Raups former Rintheim and his wife **Eva Elisabeth born Palmerin, (alias “Palmar”).  Another record of this event lists Jakob Raups wife as **Anna Catharina (see below). Johann Michael Clour was 23 years old and Katarina was 21 and 1/2 when they married making Katarina’s birth year circa 1782. Katarina’s death notice records her date of death as 31st August 1854, (burial on 3rd September 1854). Her age at death was given as 67 making her birth year 1787, not 1782. Probably the former is more correct.

Nine months after their marriage, their son Johann Michaël was born on the 26th December 1804 at 2 o’clock in the afternoon. Johann was christened on the 28th December 1804 and his godparents were Christian Clour, local carperter and “brother of the mother of the child” and his wife Margaretha born Buchleiterin. This record is incorrect as Christian was the brother of the father of the child, not the mother. Johann Michaël Clür was recorded as deceased but no date of death was given. There is another record of a death of Johanna Michael Clour, son of Michael Clour and Katharina Raupin, in 1813 making him 9 years old at the time of his death.

Another Johann Michael Clour was born to Johann Michael and Katharina Raupp, on the 14th December 1814 and christened on the 25th December 1814, He died on the 14th October 1867 in Neureut-S, Welschneureurt, Baden at the age of 52 years and was buried on the 16th October 1867.

Johann Michaël was the uncle of my great-great-grandfather, **Johann Michael Clur (1830-1902). (see **Johann Michael Clur – 1830-1902)

**Catharina Clour (1806-1848) , (daughter of **Johann Michael Clour (1780 – 1825)), and **Katarina Raupp, (1818 – 1871)

**Katharina Clour, the second born to **Johann Michael Clour and **Katarina Raupp, was born on the 16th September 1806, baptized on the 19th September 1806, and died on the 21st July 1848 aged 42 years.

I believe, based on the baptism notice hereunder that **Catharina Clour was the mother of **Johann Michael Clur (my great-great-grandfather). He was born on the 18th July 1830 and baptized on the 22nd July 1830 at the Evangelische Kirche Welschneureuth. He was the son of **Catherina Clour and an unknown father. He was presumably illegitimate, as Catherina gave him her surname, however on the page before another baptized baby is clearly marked as illegitimate and this is not the case for **Johann Michael Clur . Catharina was 24 years old when he was born. See also Johann Michael Clur – 1830-1902

Copy of the original document recording the baptism of Johan Michael Clour born in 1830

The old German text is difficult to decipher but this is what I have made of this text, with the help of Wilfried Visser and my cousin Annemarie Xavier:

2) dessen Ehefrau Catharina geb. Durand. Welshneureuth den 22ten Juli 1830. Eggly, Pfarr.

26.3 On the 18th July 1830 Johann Michael Clour was born at exactly 4 o’clock in the morning and baptized on the 22nd of July. Mother: Catharina, daughter of the deceased Johannes Clour and Catharina Raupin of Hagsfeld. Witnesses 1) Michael Schlaback, local citizen and carpenter and 2) has wife Catharina born Durand. Welscheureuth 22nd July 1830. Pastor Eggly.

Katharina Clour, went on to marry Johann Peter Grether (Greder/Greter/Groether), son of Georg Adam Grether and Magdalena Brennter on the 5th February 1837. At that time my great-great-grandfather was 7 years old. Johann Peter was born on the 7th June 1809 and baptized on 11 June 1809 in Teutschneureut. After Catharina died he married Susanna Gros. Johann Peter died on the 7th January 1856, just a week before Johann Michael Clour enlisted as a soldier in the D legion of the British German Legion. See also Johann Michael Clur – 1830-1902. Katarina’s sister, Eva Elisabetha Clour, married Philipp Grether, Peter’s brother, in 1841. When he enlisted, Johann Michael Clour listed “Philipp Kroeter” (Groether) as his next of kin.
